Athenry is a small market town in County Galway with a Norman castle, surviving medieval walls and a ruined Dominican priory, all within a 10-minute walk. It is a commuter town for Galway, 25 km west, and most travellers see it as a stop on the Dublin–Galway rail line rather than a base. The ballad The Fields of Athenry, written in 1979, made the name known far beyond the town.

The town is compact and walkable; the castle, walls, priory and heritage centre are within about 10 minutes on foot. A bike or car is needed for Castle Ellen, Monivea and Knockmoy. Athenry railway station is 300 m northwest of the centre, on the Dublin–Galway and Limerick–Galway lines.

- Monivea Castle is closed; only the exterior can be seen.
- Intercity buses pass on the M6 and do not serve the town; use the train or drive.
