Goroka
Go for 3–4 nights in September for the Goroka Show, or 2 nights off-season as a Highlands base; skip the road in from Lae and fly.
Goroka sits at about 1,600 m in the Eastern Highlands and has a mild climate all year. It is a university and research town of roughly 20,000 people, and the main reason to come is the Goroka Show, a sing-sing held around 16 September that brings together more than 100 tribes. Off-season the town is quiet: a small museum, markets, a theatre and day walks, plus Mt Wilhelm staging further out. Most visitors arrive on a PNG Air flight from Port Moresby, sleep in one of the town hotels and move with a driver or guide.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Melanesia ↗Malaria is present in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and parts of Vanuatu (not Fiji or New Caledonia): ask a travel clinic about tablets before you go.
- Papua New Guinea ↗Every visitor needs a visa (an online e-visa, or a visa on arrival for a short list of passports) and must file the free Digital Arrival Card before landing: check the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority for your passport before booking.
- Papua New Guinea ↗Some governments advise against travel to parts of the Highlands provinces because of tribal fighting; check your own government's current advice before you go.
- Papua New Guinea ↗Almost all land is customary: ask permission before walking, swimming or photographing, and expect to pay fees to landowners.

Getting around
The centre around the airport, main market, shops and Bird of Paradise Hotel is small enough to walk. For anything outside it — Asaro, Mt Gahavisuka, Daulo Pass — use a hotel-arranged driver or a guide; reliable taxis exist but are best booked through your hotel. There is no useful public transport for visitors.

North Goroka (Mokara St)
Pacific Gardens, a few minutes by car from the centre; quieter, with a creek and garden setting and airport transfers.

Watch out
Safety
- Road travel on the Highlands Highway is risky: landslides, potholes and armed holdups are reported. Fly in if you can.
- Some walking areas near town, including the road to Mt Kiss, are considered no-go; take local advice and a guide.
- The Goroka Show sells out accommodation months ahead: book the hotel before the flight.
- Card fraud is reported at some stores; carry small kina notes and use bank ATMs.
- Mobile coverage in and around town is reported by both operators, but do not rely on it outside Goroka.
