Goroka
Go for 3–4 nights in September for the Goroka Show, or 2 nights off-season as a Highlands base; skip the road in from Lae and fly.
Goroka sits at about 1,600 m in the Eastern Highlands and has a mild climate all year. It is a university and research town of roughly 20,000 people, and the main reason to come is the Goroka Show, a sing-sing held around 16 September that brings together more than 100 tribes. Off-season the town is quiet: a small museum, markets, a theatre and day walks, plus Mt Wilhelm staging further out. Most visitors arrive on a PNG Air flight from Port Moresby, sleep in one of the town hotels and move with a driver or guide.

Get around
The centre around the airport, main market, shops and Bird of Paradise Hotel is small enough to walk. For anything outside it — Asaro, Mt Gahavisuka, Daulo Pass — use a hotel-arranged driver or a guide; reliable taxis exist but are best booked through your hotel. There is no useful public transport for visitors.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Shake hands lightly; greet everyone in a group; avoid: Crushing handshakes or ignoring elders
- Village visit: Arrive with your guide, meet the leaders first, bring a small gift if advised; avoid: Walking into gardens or houses uninvited
- Money and gifts: Pay agreed fees to the right person; avoid: Handing out money or sweets to children
- Anger: Stay calm and let your guide negotiate; avoid: Shouting; public shame can escalate quickly
- Sunday: Expect church and quiet; join a service if invited; avoid: Noisy activities near villages
- Dress: Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees; a laplap (sarong) works; avoid: Swimwear or short shorts in villages
Scams and watch-outs
- Road travel on the Highlands Highway is risky: landslides, potholes and armed holdups are reported. Fly in if you can.
- Some walking areas near town, including the road to Mt Kiss, are considered no-go; take local advice and a guide.
- The Goroka Show sells out accommodation months ahead: book the hotel before the flight.
- Card fraud is reported at some stores; carry small kina notes and use bank ATMs.
- Mobile coverage in and around town is reported by both operators, but do not rely on it outside Goroka.
Goroka is calmer than Port Moresby or Lae but not a walk-anywhere town: stay in the centre in daylight, use hotel drivers after dark, and take local advice before any walk or road trip. The main risks are road holdups, petty theft in crowds and altitude on nearby mountains.
