Staraya Ladoga is a village of about 370 people on the Volkhov River, 8 km north of Volkhov and roughly 120 km from Saint Petersburg by road. It calls itself Russia's first capital: Rurik's base from 862, a fortress town of the Novgorod Republic, and the site of a 1114 kremlin and two 12th-century churches with faded frescoes. Sights sit within a short walk of each other; the trip is a half-day of looking, not a resort stay.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; no bike or car rental. Bus #23 (and K-23, 23A) from Volkhovstroy-1 station in Volkhov takes about 50 minutes and stops three times in the village — near Nikolsky Monastery, by the central square after the kremlin, and near the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist. A car helps for the kurgans and the Uspenskoye estate, which sit outside the centre.

Safety

A quiet village with no notable street crime; the real risks are the sparse bus timetable, unlit roads after dark, winter ice and cash-only tills. Carry rubles and a charged phone.
  • Bus #23 runs on a sparse schedule with gaps up to 2 hours, thinner in the evening; check times before you commit to a late return.
  • Trains from Moscow can arrive at Volkhov around 04:49, before cafés and museums open.
  • Museum and kremlin hours are limited (roughly 10:00–17:00/18:00) and can change by season: check before travelling.
  • Card payment is unreliable in a village this size; carry rubles in cash.
