Gravenhurst
Give Gravenhurst one night, two if you want a steamship cruise and a dark-sky night drive; it is a supply town and lake gateway, not a sightseeing city.
Gravenhurst is a town of about 12,000 on Lake Muskoka, the southern door to cottage country and about 170 km north of Toronto by Highway 400 then Highway 11. Most visitors come for the water, the wooden-boat heritage and the wharf, and use the town for groceries and supplies on the way to a cottage. The centre is walkable and there is no local public transit, so a car makes the surrounding lakes, trails and dark-sky reserve reachable.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
The compact centre is walkable and there is no local public transit. Taxis cover short hops. A car is the practical way to reach the wharf area, the boat museum, trailheads and the dark-sky reserve; Highway 11 and Muskoka Road 169 (Bethune Drive) are the main roads in. Ontario Northland and FlixBus serve the town from Toronto, Barrie and North Bay, and a scheduled shuttle runs from Toronto Pearson (check current times).

Watch out
Safety
- Summer weekends and holiday Mondays jam Highway 11 northbound out of Toronto: leave early or travel midweek.
- Many lake resorts, cottages and some restaurants are seasonal and close from late October to May: confirm before booking.
- The dark-sky reserve and backcountry parks have no services, no lighting and no cell coverage in places: carry water, a torch and a paper map.
- Winter roads ice up and snow tires are the norm; drive to conditions.
- Black flies and mosquitoes are heavy in late spring and early summer: bring repellent.
