Lowell is the first planned industrial mill city in the United States, about 40 minutes northwest of Boston by car and roughly 45 minutes by MBTA Commuter Rail. The reason to come is Lowell National Historical Park: canals, mill buildings, the Boott Cotton Mills Museum and a working trolley. Downtown is compact and walkable, so a day covers the core; a night makes sense for the July folk festival, a Tsongas Center game or a Lowell Memorial Auditorium show. It is a day trip or a one-night stop, not a multi-day base.

Downtown is walkable: the national park visitor center, canals, museums and Market Street restaurants sit within about 20 minutes on foot. The Lowell Regional Transit Authority runs local buses and shuttles, including between the train station and downtown. A car helps for Pawtucket Falls, LeLacheur Park and the surrounding towns; parking downtown is metered or in garages.

- The Lowell Connector is a short, fast highway into downtown and has a poor safety record: drive it slowly and watch merges.
- MBTA Commuter Rail is the easy Boston link, but late-night return trains are limited: check the last departure before you commit to an evening.
