Toodyay

Go as a day trip from Perth or one night: the Victorian main street, gaol museum and mill fill 3–4 hours, and midweek you can do it by train without a car.

Toodyay is a farming town of about 1,400 people 85 km east of Perth, up the Avon valley in the Wheatbelt. Its 19th-century buildings are the reason to come: Connor's Mill, the 1865 gaol, two 1860s pubs and a compact Stirling Terrace you can walk end to end in 15 minutes. Most visitors come for a half day; a night makes sense if you want the pubs in the evening or the Avon Descent in August.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town centre is small enough to walk: Stirling Terrace, the mill, the gaol and the shops are all within 15 minutes on foot. The railway station is a platform halt at the west end of town with no facilities. For Pelham Reserve, the racecourse or the caravan parks you want a car or a bike.

Northam

go

Door to door: About 35 min

Drive southeast on Toodyay Road and the Northam–Toodyay road, about 35 km (22 mi)

Bigger town with heritage buildings and the Avon riverbank; pairs well with Toodyay in one day.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive via Northam and the Great Southern Highway

The state's oldest inland town; do it as a loop with Northam, not a return dash.

Clackline

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive south on Toodyay Road to the Great Eastern Highway

Very small; only worth it if you are already driving that way.

Door to door: About 1 h

Transwa train from Toodyay station, about 1 h; or drive Toodyay Road

Train runs on limited days, so check the timetable before you rely on it.

Stirling Terrace (town centre)

Pubs with rooms, the manor and the cafés; everything walkable, best for one night without a car.

Racecourse Road / river edge

Holiday park and caravan sites about 2 km (1.2 mi) from the centre; you need a car or a 25-min walk.

West Toodyay

Farm cottages 3 km (1.9 mi) up the line; quiet, car needed.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town and safe for tourists; the real issues are heat in summer, wildlife and unsealed edges on country roads at dusk, and thin mobile coverage if you break down.
  • Trains run only a few days a week and some services are commuter-only: check the Transwa timetable before you plan a rail day trip.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra 4G only in town, nothing from other networks, and no signal on the approach roads.
  • Summer days regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F) with little shade on the main street.
  • Festival and race dates change or get cancelled: confirm before travelling for an event.
  • Fuel and food options are limited after about 5 PM; the roadhouse closes in the afternoon.
