Toodyay
Go as a day trip from Perth or one night: the Victorian main street, gaol museum and mill fill 3–4 hours, and midweek you can do it by train without a car.
Toodyay is a farming town of about 1,400 people 85 km east of Perth, up the Avon valley in the Wheatbelt. Its 19th-century buildings are the reason to come: Connor's Mill, the 1865 gaol, two 1860s pubs and a compact Stirling Terrace you can walk end to end in 15 minutes. Most visitors come for a half day; a night makes sense if you want the pubs in the evening or the Avon Descent in August.

Get around
The town centre is small enough to walk: Stirling Terrace, the mill, the gaol and the shops are all within 15 minutes on foot. The railway station is a platform halt at the west end of town with no facilities. For Pelham Reserve, the racecourse or the caravan parks you want a car or a bike.
