Chester-le-Street is a small commuter town 8 miles south of Newcastle, on the London–Edinburgh main line. Its draw is Durham County Cricket Club's Riverside Ground and a church that was briefly the resting place of St Cuthbert. Everything in the centre is walkable in an hour; most travellers see it as a stop between Durham and Newcastle, or as a base for Beamish and Lumley Castle.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat: Front Street, the church and the viaduct are all within a 15-minute walk. Buses 21, X21, 50, 71, 78 and X12 stop along Front Street rather than at a bus station. Transpennine runs an hourly train to Newcastle (about 10 min) and Durham (about 12 min); other operators may also call — check the journey planner. Taxis are available in town; ask your hotel to book one.

A quiet commuter town; the real risks are wet, dark pavements in winter, river flooding near the cricket ground, and last trains back from Newcastle, which can be earlier than you expect — check the journey planner before a late night out.
  • The railway station has limited ticket and toilet facilities; buy tickets in advance or on the app.
  • The Riverside Ground and riverside park can flood after heavy rain on the Durham moors.
  • Cricket fixtures are seasonal and change yearly: check the Durham CCC site before booking.
