Chester-le-Street

Chester-le-Street is a small commuter town 8 miles south of Newcastle, on the London–Edinburgh main line. Its draw is Durham County Cricket Club's Riverside Ground and a church that was briefly the resting place of St Cuthbert. Everything in the centre is walkable in an hour; most travellers see it as a stop between Durham and Newcastle, or as a base for Beamish and Lumley Castle.

Get around
The centre is compact and flat: Front Street, the church and the viaduct are all within a 15-minute walk. Buses 21, X21, 50, 71, 78 and X12 stop along Front Street rather than at a bus station.
