Poza Rica is an oil and road-transport hub in northern Veracruz, not a sightseeing town. Its value to a traveller is position: El Tajín is 15 km away, the Costa Esmeralda beaches are 40–60 minutes east, and the Central de Autobuses connects more than 30 long-distance lines. Come for one night, or use it as a transport pivot between Veracruz, Xalapa and Tuxpan.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer heat and humidity; the region is tropical and rains hard Jun–Oct.
- El Tajín is a separate site with its own entry fee and hours: check the INAH page before you go.
- El Tajín National Airport (PAZ) has no scheduled flights: do not book a trip around it.
- Bus terminals are split by destination — the ADO terminal serves Tuxpan only, and the Petromex terminal handles southbound routes. Confirm which one your ticket leaves from.
- Ask the fare or the total before you sit down in bars or take an unmetered taxi.
