Brookline
Base in Boston or Cambridge and ride the Green Line C or D branch into Brookline for a half-day: two National Historic Sites, Coolidge Corner and a kosher food strip. Skip sleeping here.
Brookline is a dense residential town of about 63,000 people, wrapped around Boston and bordering six of its neighbourhoods. It has no hotel district worth the money and no single headline sight, but it does hold two free National Park Service sites and the Boston area's densest strip of kosher restaurants along Harvard Street. Treat it as a half-day or an evening out from Boston, not as a place to stay.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
The MBTA Green Line light rail is the way in and around: the C branch runs along Beacon Street through Coolidge Corner and Washington Square, the D branch stops at Brookline Village, Brookline Hills, Beaconsfield and Reservoir. The 66 bus runs up Harvard Street between Harvard Square and Allston. Bluebikes docks are across the town. Driving is a poor idea: overnight street parking is banned and cars left out after 2AM (11PM in some areas) get ticketed.

Better as its own half-day than a quick hop.

Chestnut Hill and the Shops at Chestnut Hill sit on the border.

Awkward by transit; only worth it for a specific stop.
Arlington, Massachusetts

Two changes; go only if you have a reason.
Lexington, Massachusetts

A full half-day; the Revolutionary War sites are the draw.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Coolidge Corner
The only area with real evening life: shops, the Coolidge Corner Theatre, restaurants. Very few hotels; most beds are small inns or short-term rentals.
Brookline Village
Quieter, historic, on the Green Line D branch; a handful of small inns and easy access to Longwood Medical Area.
Washington Square
Taverns and restaurants on Beacon Street, Green Line C branch. Residential; almost no lodging.
Better: Boston or Cambridge
More beds, better prices and more to do at night. Ride the Green Line in for a half-day instead.

Watch out
Safety
- No overnight street parking: cars on the street after 2AM (11PM in some areas) are ticketed.
- A two-hour parking limit applies on many streets and is enforced unevenly.
- Kosher restaurants on Harvard Street close Friday afternoon for the Sabbath and reopen Saturday night or Sunday.
- Most of Brookline is residential: keep noise down in the evening.
- Pavements ice over in winter; the town is hilly in places.
