Brookline
Base in Boston or Cambridge and ride the Green Line C or D branch into Brookline for a half-day: two National Historic Sites, Coolidge Corner and a kosher food strip. Skip sleeping here.
Brookline is a dense residential town of about 63,000 people, wrapped around Boston and bordering six of its neighbourhoods. It has no hotel district worth the money and no single headline sight, but it does hold two free National Park Service sites and the Boston area's densest strip of kosher restaurants along Harvard Street. Treat it as a half-day or an evening out from Boston, not as a place to stay.

Get around
The MBTA Green Line light rail is the way in and around: the C branch runs along Beacon Street through Coolidge Corner and Washington Square, the D branch stops at Brookline Village, Brookline Hills, Beaconsfield and Reservoir. The 66 bus runs up Harvard Street between Harvard Square and Allston. Bluebikes docks are across the town. Driving is a poor idea: overnight street parking is banned and cars left out after 2AM (11PM in some areas) get ticketed.

- Taverns and restaurants on Beacon Street, Green Line C branch. Residential; almost no lodging.

- More beds, better prices and more to do at night. Ride the Green Line in for a half-day instead.
