Mehsana is a working North Gujarat town of about 185,000 people, 70 km north of Ahmedabad, with a handful of stepwells, Jain temples and gardens and no headline monument. Its value is position: Modhera's Sun Temple, Patan's Rani ki Vav and Vadnagar are all short drives away, and rooms cost less than in Ahmedabad. Come for one or two nights with a car and driver, or skip it if you are not heading this way.

Getting around

The town spreads along the Ahmedabad–Palanpur highway; most sights are 1–3 km apart and not pleasant to walk in heat. Autorickshaws and city buses (about 08:00–21:00, ₹5–15) cover the centre; for Modhera, Patan or Vadnagar you need a car with driver or a bus from the central bus port.

Watch out

Safety

Mehsana is a low-crime small city and the main risks are practical: heat, highway driving, stray dogs and stepwells with no railings. Women travelling alone report stares rather than danger; dress modestly at temples.
  • Summer heat from April: plan sights before 10:00 and after 17:00.
  • Boter Kothani Vav is polluted and in poor repair — look, do not touch the water.
  • Rajmahal is closed to the public and needs permission; do not count on entry.
  • Jain Dadawadi is under reconstruction as of 2026 — check before going.
  • No photography inside Jain temples without permission.
  • Highway driving is fast and erratic; avoid night driving outside town.
