Khatse
One night is enough to see the dam and the mountain scenery; use it as a stop on a Lesotho Highlands road trip, not a base.
Khatse is a tiny village in the Lesotho Highlands that gives its name to the Katse Dam, a 185 m high wall and reservoir built to supply water to South Africa. The dam is the only reason to stop, but the surrounding mountains and rural countryside make it worth a single night. Most visitors arrive by car from Maseru (about 3.5 h) or as part of a loop that includes Semonkong and Sani Pass.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
- Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
- Lesotho ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Lesotho government sources; you also need South African entry to reach it by road.
- Lesotho ↗Taking a South African rental car into Lesotho needs a cross-border letter from the rental company; Sani Pass needs a 4x4.
- Lesotho ↗Border posts have fixed opening hours; smaller posts close earlier than the main Maseru bridge.
