Skip Airdrie as a base unless you need cheap beds north of Calgary: it is a 25–35 min drive or a commuter bus from downtown, with one small museum and no sight of its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Airdrie is a bedroom and industrial city of about 61,000 people on Highway 2, 30 km north of Calgary in the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. It grew from an 1889 railway siding and holds little for a visitor beyond the Nose Creek Valley Museum, a Christmas lights festival in Nose Creek Park, and outlet shopping at CrossIron Mills just south of town. Its real use is as a cheaper, quieter place to sleep while doing Calgary and the corridor by car.

Arrive & move

Getting around

Airdrie is a car town: most sights, hotels and restaurants sit along Highway 2, Main Street and Yankee Valley Boulevard, and walking between them is slow. Airdrie Transit runs local routes on roughly 30-minute headways at peak and 60 minutes off-peak, plus commuter routes 900, 901 and 902 to Calgary. Airdrie Transit's own site lists the current local fare (about $2.25 in 2018; check 2026).

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 25–35 min by car; about 1 h by bus

Drive Highway 2 south, or Airdrie Transit commuter routes 900/901/902

The main reason to sleep here: downtown Calgary, Stampede Park and the airport are all a short drive south.

CrossIron Mills

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive south on Highway 2, about 10 min

Large outlet mall just south of Airdrie; open Mon–Sat 10:00–21:00, Sun 11:00–18:00 (check).

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Highway 72 east then Highway 9, or Highway 2 south and Highway 1 east

Badlands and the Royal Tyrrell Museum; a full day out, not a quick stop.

Cochrane

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Highway 567 west to Highway 22

Small foothills town; combine with Calgary's west side rather than driving out and back.

Banffovernight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Highway 2 south to Highway 1 west

Too far for a relaxed return day; sleep in the mountains instead.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Highway 2 / Gateway Road NE

Chain hotels at the north end, free parking, quick on and off the highway; best if you have a car.

Main Street and Edmonton Trail

Smaller independent motels and the walkable old core; restaurants within a few minutes on foot.

East Lake Boulevard NE

Budget motels with pools; a short drive from the centre, so a car is needed.

Watch out

Safety

Airdrie is a low-crime suburban city and feels safe day and night. The real risks are winter driving on Highway 2, black ice, and long, dark, unlit walks between the highway strip and the old core: drive or take a taxi after dark.
  • Winter driving: Highway 2 between Airdrie and Calgary ices up and closes in blizzards; check Alberta 511 before leaving.
  • A car is close to essential; without one you are limited to a few blocks and the commuter bus.
  • Sales tax is added at the till in Canada; posted prices are before tax.
  • Tipping is expected: 15–20% in restaurants and bars, 10–15% for taxis.
