Pune is Maharashtra's second city and its student-and-IT engine: hill forts on the edge of the Western Ghats, a compact old core of peth lanes and museums, and a food and nightlife scene that beats most Indian cities of its size. It is a working city, not a monument city — you come for forts, cafes and a base for the Ghats, not for a single headline sight. Two nights covers the core; add a night if you want Sinhagad or a Ghats day trip.

Getting around

Pune Metro (Purple and Aqua lines) links PCMC–Swargate and Vanaz–Ramwadi; use it to skip traffic. Auto-rickshaws are the default for short hops — insist on the meter (about ₹18 for the first 1.5 km, then about ₹12 per km) and walk away if refused. Ola and Uber work citywide. PMPML buses cover everything for ₹5–30, with a day pass around ₹40–50. Traffic is heavy 09:00–11:00 and 17:30–20:00.

Watch out

Safety

Pune is generally safe for visitors by day and in the main eating and hotel districts. The real friction is transport: metered autos, late-night surcharges and monsoon roads. Women travellers report fewer issues than in Delhi or Mumbai, but avoid isolated stretches after dark and use app cabs at night.
  • Auto drivers who refuse the meter or quote a flat fare — the meter is the law and usually the cheapest; agree any late-night 1.5× surcharge before boarding.
  • Monsoon potholes and standing water from June to September; two-wheeler riding is genuinely risky here.
  • Pickpockets and bag-snatching in crowded markets and near stations; keep phones out of hand at night.
  • Summer heat and sun: April–May tops 38°C, so plan forts for early morning.
  • Touts at bus stands steering you to private buses — the state MSRTC 'Shivneri' service to Mumbai is the reliable one.
