Monastir is a compact Sahel-coast city: a 9th-century ribat and the Bourguiba mausoleum sit within a 15-minute walk of the medina, the marina and a long beach strip. It works as a 2-night beach-and-history stop between Sousse and Mahdia, or as a cheap flight-in base (MIR) for the central coast. Sights are few; the value is the coast, the walkability and the airport.

- The Great Mosque is off-limits to non-Muslims; the ribat and mausoleum are the visitable sites.
