Spend one night in Lao Cai as a border hub; use it for a day trip to Sa Pa or Bac Ha, then continue to Hanoi or China.
Lao Cai is a small town on the Vietnam‑China border. Trains from Hanoi arrive after about 9 h, and the border to Hekou opens 07:00‑22:00 local time. Taxis are cheap, the town is spread out, and most attractions (Cốc Lếu markets, border gate) are within walking distance. One night is enough to catch a train or bus onward, or to join a day‑trip to Sa Pa or Bac Ha.
