Ipoh
Give Ipoh 1–2 nights: Old Town heritage and hawker food on day one, cave temples by Grab on day two. Skip it if you only want beaches.
Ipoh is Perak's capital and Malaysia's third-largest city, built on Kinta Valley tin and now known for its food and its shophouse Old Town. The centre is walkable and cheap; the cave temples and the Cameron Highlands gateway sit outside it. Most travellers pass through for one or two nights between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, or use it as a base for Perak.
