Jerez is the sherry capital of Andalusia and the cradle of flamenco, about 1 h 10 min by train from Seville and 40 min from Cádiz. The old town is compact and walkable, so two nights covers the bodegas, the Alcázar and a tablao without rushing. Come in spring or autumn; July and August are punishing.

Getting around

Walk: the historic centre is flat and compact, and most sights sit within 20 minutes of each other. Taxis are cheap and metered, with ranks in the centre. A car helps for the coast and the Sierra de Grazalema but is a liability in the old town, so park in a central car park.

Safety

Jerez is a safe city by Spanish standards; the usual care in the old town at night and around the Arenal bars is enough. Watch your bag in crowds and use metered taxis.
  • Summer heat: plan sightseeing before noon and after 18:00 in July and August.
  • Bodega tours need booking ahead in high season; walk-up places are limited.
  • No left luggage at the airport or bus station, so plan around your bags.
  • Feria and MotoGP weekends fill every hotel: book months ahead or avoid those dates.
