Otavalo sits at about 2,560 m in the northern Andes, two hours by bus from Quito, and is the market town of the Otavalo Kichwa weavers. One night covers the market and Peguche waterfall; two nights add San Pablo lake, Cuicocha crater or Cotacachi. It is a year-round stop, and the Saturday market is the reason most people come.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Taxis inside town cost about $1; to Peguche about $2.50, to Cuicocha about $5–6. Buses to nearby villages and Cotacachi leave from the main terminal, and Quito/Ibarra buses run about every 15 minutes.

Safety

Otavalo is calm by day and the market is policed, but keep bags in front in the Saturday crush and take registered taxis at night. The bigger risks are altitude on arrival, rain-slick Andean roads and unlit paths back from the waterfall.
  • Altitude about 2,560 m: take the first day easy if you flew in recently.
  • Market prices are low and bargaining is mild; check whether goods are handmade or resold.
  • The animal market north of town is not for everyone: livestock handling is rough.
  • Weekend and festival nights fill up: book a week ahead for Inti Raymi and Yamor.
  • Pickpockets work the crowded Saturday market; keep bags in front.
