Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Mannheim sits where the Rhine meets the Neckar, an hour south of Frankfurt by ICE. It was flattened in the war and rebuilt in a 1950s modern style, so it reads as a working city rather than a postcard one. Its draw is practical: a fast rail hub, a chessboard centre that is easy to walk once you learn the blocks, one of Europe's largest Baroque palaces, and Heidelberg, Weinheim and Schwetzingen within a short train ride. Most travellers use it as a base for the Rhine-Neckar region rather than a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is a grid of blocks called Quadrate (Q3, N4 and so on) with almost no street names, so navigate by block, not by street. Trams and buses run across the city and link Ludwigshafen, Heidelberg and Weinheim; the S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar covers the region. Buy tickets from the VRN machines or app before boarding. Much of the centre is pedestrianised and walkable.

Inside the grid, walkable to Paradeplatz, the Water Tower and the Planken shopping streets; best for a short stay.

Near Hauptbahnhof

Practical for early trains and the palace next door; quieter at night than the centre.

Jungbusch

Old working quarter west of the centre, bars and a younger crowd, 10–15 min walk to Paradeplatz.

Watch out

Safety

Mannheim is a normal German city and safe by day and evening in the centre. Watch your bag around Hauptbahnhof and Paradeplatz, and expect some noise and drinking around Jungbusch at weekends.
  • The Quadrat addresses confuse everyone: follow the block letters and numbers, and ask a local if lost.
  • Some older ticket machines take coins only; use the app or a card-enabled machine.
  • Night trains stop here mid-route, so arrivals and departures can fall in the middle of the night with few onward connections.
  • The city was rebuilt after wartime bombing, so expect 1950s architecture rather than an old town.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Paradeplatz and the grid, the palace and Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichsplatz and the Water Tower, Luisenpark and the Neckar.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Baroque Palace, Luisenpark, Technoseum, Kunsthalle) and eat pages with last orders.
