Mannheim
Give Mannheim one night as a Rhine-Neckar base: the grid centre, the Baroque palace and Luisenpark fill a day; Heidelberg is 15 min by train.
Mannheim sits where the Rhine meets the Neckar, an hour south of Frankfurt by ICE. It was flattened in the war and rebuilt in a 1950s modern style, so it reads as a working city rather than a postcard one. Its draw is practical: a fast rail hub, a chessboard centre that is easy to walk once you learn the blocks, one of Europe's largest Baroque palaces, and Heidelberg, Weinheim and Schwetzingen within a short train ride. Most travellers use it as a base for the Rhine-Neckar region rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is a grid of blocks called Quadrate (Q3, N4 and so on) with almost no street names, so navigate by block, not by street. Trams and buses run across the city and link Ludwigshafen, Heidelberg and Weinheim; the S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar covers the region. Buy tickets from the VRN machines or app before boarding. Much of the centre is pedestrianised and walkable.
