Tatvan sits on the western shore of Lake Van at 1,640 m and exists for travellers mainly as a transport hub: the eastern end of the Ankara railway, with buses and dolmuşes onward to Van. The town itself is low-rise and modern; the reason to stop longer is Mount Nemrut, the dormant volcano behind it, whose crater holds warm lakes you can swim in. Most trips spend one night, or two if the crater is the point.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk; everything useful is along Cumhuriyet Cd. You need wheels for Mount Nemrut: ask at the bus offices about tours, negotiate a taxi, or hitch, since cars head up from town steadily. Dolmuşes to Van and Ahlat leave from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Tatvan is a small, quiet town and the usual precautions apply: watch traffic on Cumhuriyet Cd and keep valuables close. The real hazards are altitude, the cobbled crater road and bears near the crater lakes.
  • The crater road is cobbled and climbs over 3,000 (≈ US$75) m; snow can close it outside summer.
  • Bears (ayı) live around the crater lakes: do not feed them, and heed the warning signs.
  • The region is seismically active; the last major earthquake was in 2011.
  • Lake water is soda-salt and stings the eyes, so swimming in the lake itself is unpleasant.
  • The Vangölü Ekspresi is often hours late; do not build a tight onward connection on it.
