Batman is an entirely modern oil town of about 492,000 people on the Batman river, 100 km east of Diyarbakır. It is pronounced baat-maan, not like the comic character, and the name comes from a contraction of Batı Raman, Turkey's largest oilfield. Travellers come for the museum, the town sign and Hasankeyf; the city itself is a transport stop, not a destination.

Watch out

Safety

Batman is a working Turkish city and normal precautions apply; the south-east has a security history, so check your government's current travel advice before travelling.
  • Summer heat: July and August afternoons are punishing; do the museum and the sign in the morning.
  • The Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi is badly overcrowded in early August when seasonal farm workers head west; book or avoid.
  • The airport terminal is 8 km from the centre on the north perimeter, not at the terminal you may expect from the map.
  • The town sign sits on a highway: stop only where it is safe and legal.
