Quetta

Visit Quetta with a police escort for 1 day; longer stays need a hotel that accepts foreigners and an escort for all movements.

Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, sits at 1,680 m in a dry mountain climate. Foreign travelers must obtain police permission and be escorted, so a single day is realistic unless you arrange a stay at an approved hotel and escort for longer.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.

Watch out

Safety

Quetta requires a police escort for all foreign visitors (Feb 2025). The city is generally safe within escorted movements, but security incidents occur. Follow escort instructions, avoid independent travel, and do not discuss religion, culture, or politics. The people are hospitable; a greeting of 'Salaam Alaykum' goes a long way.
  • Foreigners need a police NOC and escort for any travel.
  • Sandstorms can close roads and delay trains (check conditions).
  • Security incidents possible; follow escort instructions.
