Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Culemborg is a small historic town on the south bank of the Lek, on the Gelderland–Utrecht border, about 28,500 people. It got city rights in 1315 and its compact centre — two churches on one market square, a surviving inner gate, a 1560 orphanage museum and the gardens of a former castle — fits into half a day on foot. Trains to Utrecht and Tiel run about every 15 minutes, so most travellers use it as a quiet stop between bigger bases rather than a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small and flat: walk it. Bike rental in the centre is the best way to reach the Lek dikes, Fort Everdingen and the surrounding polders. Culemborg station sits south-west of the old town, roughly a 10-minute walk to the Markt. Local buses cover the villages; a car only helps for the waterline forts.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Direct train from Culemborg station, about every 15 min

Wharf-cellars and a bigger old town; easy half-day or evening.

Tiel

go

Door to door: About 20–25 min

Direct train south on the same line

Fruit-growing town on the Waal; pair with Culemborg in one day.

Door to door: About 1 h

Train with a change, or drive the A2

St John's Cathedral and a lively market square; a full day.

Fort Everdingen

caution

Door to door: About 30–45 min by bike

Bike or car west along the Lek dike

Part of the New Dutch Waterline; opening is limited and seasonal — check before riding out.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Historic centre (Markt and Tollenstraat)

Everything walkable; a handful of small B&Bs and cafés, so book ahead for weekends.

Havendijk and the old harbour

Quiet riverside lanes a few minutes from the Markt; restaurants and guest rooms.

Lek bank at Beusichem

Village across the river with a hotel and ferry; car or bike needed, not a walk from the station.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are uneven cobbles, fast bikes on the dikes and dark unlit lanes along the Lek after a late dinner. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Small-town hours: many restaurants and the orphanage museum keep limited days — check before you build a day around them.
  • The castle itself is gone; only the gardens remain, and they keep seasonal opening.
  • Weekend trains on the Utrecht–Tiel line are less frequent than weekday service; check the last connection if you plan a late return.
  • Bikes and mopeds have priority on the dikes and in the centre — look both ways on cycle paths.

  4. Ferry and dike fixtures for Beusichem and the Lek bank so bike day trips can go green.
