Culemborg
One night is enough: old market square, orphanage museum and castle gardens in half a day, then train on to Utrecht or 's-Hertogenbosch.
Culemborg is a small historic town on the south bank of the Lek, on the Gelderland–Utrecht border, about 28,500 people. It got city rights in 1315 and its compact centre — two churches on one market square, a surviving inner gate, a 1560 orphanage museum and the gardens of a former castle — fits into half a day on foot. Trains to Utrecht and Tiel run about every 15 minutes, so most travellers use it as a quiet stop between bigger bases rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is small and flat: walk it. Bike rental in the centre is the best way to reach the Lek dikes, Fort Everdingen and the surrounding polders. Culemborg station sits south-west of the old town, roughly a 10-minute walk to the Markt. Local buses cover the villages; a car only helps for the waterline forts.
