Sigiriya is a village built around one rock: a 5th-century royal citadel and UNESCO site with water gardens, frescoes and a summit palace 200 m above the plain. Two nights covers the climb, Pidurangala and an elephant safari; three if you add Dambulla or Polonnaruwa. It is a base, not a town to wander.

Getting around

No train station in Sigiriya. Tuk-tuks are the practical way to move between the rock, Pidurangala and your guesthouse; agree the fare before you get in. Bicycles work for the flat village roads. Buses link Sigiriya to Dambulla every 30 min from about 06:30 to 18:00.

Bus from Sigiriya to Dambulla, about 30 min, then a tuk-tuk up the rock

Five painted caves; go early or late, and cover shoulders and knees.

Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park

Jeep safari booked through your hotel; 30–50 min north

Elephants move between the two parks by season — ask which one is holding them. One jeep for 2–3 people runs roughly €160–200 (check).

Polonnaruwa

Bus to Inamaluwa junction, change for Polonnaruwa; about 90 min to the junction

No direct bus; a long day. Better as an overnight on the way east.

Kandyovernight

Door to door: 3–4 h

Road via Dambulla and Matale, or train from Habarana

Too far for a return day; sleep in Kandy.

18 km north, on the rail line; good for train arrivals and safari lodges, less convenient for the rock.

Watch out

Safety

Low street-crime risk; the real hazards are heat, dehydration on the climb, slippery steps in rain and wasps on the path. Climb early, carry water, and don't provoke the wasps.
  • Buy your ticket inside the museum, not at the outer office — South Asian passport holders pay a lower rate and must show the passport.
  • The climb is about 1.5 h round trip with no water sold inside the complex; carry your own.
  • Stone steps get slippery in rain and the summit view can be lost in cloud.
  • Signs along the path warn about wasps — keep quiet and don't swat at them.
  • Pidurangala's final section is a boulder scramble: wear shoes, not flip-flops, and cover shoulders and knees at the temple below.
