Santa Fe, New MexicoSanta Fe
Give Santa Fe 2–3 nights based around the Plaza on foot; add a car only for Museum Hill, the opera, pueblos and ski days.
Santa Fe is the oldest and highest US state capital, at about 2,130 m (7,000 ft) below the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The downtown core around the Plaza, Railyards and Canyon Road is walkable and holds most of the museums, galleries and restaurants. A car helps for Museum Hill, the opera and day trips, but two days without one works fine. Altitude is the first thing to respect: take day one slowly.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Walk the Plaza, Railyards and Canyon Road. Santa Fe Trails buses cost $1 a ride or $2 a day pass, cash only, exact change; Route M links the depot, downtown and Museum Hill, and route #2 runs Cerrillos Road. A car is needed for the opera, pueblos, ski basin and most day trips. Downtown parking fills in summer and during Indian Market and Fiesta — park away and shuttle in.

- Winter snow can close La Bajada hill on I-25 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe for hours.
- Downtown streets wander and are not aligned to compass points; watch for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Museum and gallery hours shift by season — check before you go.
