Santa Fe is the oldest and highest US state capital, at about 2,130 m (7,000 ft) below the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The downtown core around the Plaza, Railyards and Canyon Road is walkable and holds most of the museums, galleries and restaurants. A car helps for Museum Hill, the opera and day trips, but two days without one works fine. Altitude is the first thing to respect: take day one slowly.

Walk the Plaza, Railyards and Canyon Road.
