Give Freehold one night, not a base: half a day for the battlefield and Main Street, then push on to the shore or back to New York.
Freehold is the seat of Monmouth County and the site of the Battle of Monmouth, the longest engagement of the American Revolution. Downtown Main Street packs the courthouse, a 90-foot battle monument, a 1771 church and most of the restaurants into a few walkable blocks, while the battlefield and the orchards sit a short drive out on Route 9. It works as a single night or a half-day stop between New York and the Jersey Shore, not as a multi-day base.

A car is the practical choice: the battlefield, orchards and mall are spread along US-9 and Route 33, and buses are limited. Downtown is walkable once you park. New Jersey Transit buses 131, 135 and 139 run to New York's Port Authority; the nearest rail station is Aberdeen-Matawan, about 10 miles east.
