Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Lecce is a small baroque city in Puglia, walkable end to end in about 25 minutes, with more than 30 historic churches and a Roman amphitheatre in the main square. Most travellers use it as a base for the Salento coast and beaches, which are 20–40 minutes away by car or train. Two nights covers the old town properly; three lets you add beach and day-trip days.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The whole old town is a limited-traffic zone (ZTL) and the sights sit within about 1 km of each other. SGM runs city buses and trolleybuses; buy tickets at tobacconists or newsstands before boarding. Regional trains and buses reach the coast towns.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Otranto

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train from Lecce station, about 40 min, or car on the SS16

Small harbour town with a castle and mosaic cathedral floor; half a day is enough.

Gallipoli

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train from Lecce, about 40 min, or car on the SS101

Old town on an island, linked by a bridge; busiest in July and August.

Santa Maria di Leuca

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train to Gagliano del Capo then bus, or car on the SS275

The far southern tip; a long day by public transport — better with a car.

Nardò and Porto Selvaggio

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or car, about 30 min to Nardò, then on to the coast

Baroque centre plus a coastal nature reserve with rocky swimming coves.

Torre Vado

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car on the SS274, about 1 h

Beach base rather than a day-trip target; weak public transport.

Salve and Racale

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Train to Salve–Ruggiano or Racale–Taviano, then walk or bus

Inland Salento towns; combine with a coastal stop rather than going alone.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town (centro storico)

Inside the ZTL; walk to every sight. Best for a first visit, but you cannot drive to the door — park outside and walk in.

Around the railway station

Cheaper hotels and B&Bs, 10–15 min walk to Piazza Sant'Oronzo; good for early trains and buses.

Via Salento / Porta Napoli side

Quieter streets just outside the walls, still 10 min on foot from the Duomo.

Watch out

Safety

Lecce is a calm, walkable city and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real issues are summer heat, ZTL camera fines if you drive into the old town, and pickpockets around the station and market streets.
  • The old town is a ZTL: driving in without a permit means a camera fine. Park outside the walls and walk.
  • Lecce railway station has stairs but no lifts or ramps to the platforms — allow extra time with heavy bags.
  • Summer afternoons in July and August are punishing; do churches and museums before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Many restaurants in the old town aim at tourists; prices and quality vary more than the setting suggests.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Lecce. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (hot, crowded coast), mid-August (Ferragosto closures) · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BDS: last bus and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Piazza Sant'Oronzo, Piazza del Duomo, Santa Croce and the Celestini, Porta Napoli and the castle.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and entry (Santa Croce, Duomo, Roman amphitheatre, Faggiano Museum, Castromediano museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Coast and ZTL arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
