BéziersBesièrs
Give Béziers one full day plus a second for the Canal du Midi locks and a beach run; base here 2 nights if you want Languedoc vineyards without Montpellier prices.
Béziers is a working Languedoc wine town on a steep hill above the Orb, with a 13th-century cathedral, a Romanesque bridge and the Canal du Midi's Fonseranes lock staircase on its edge. It is small enough to walk in a day, cheap by French city standards, and useful as a quieter base between Montpellier and Narbonne. The 1209 massacre of the Cathars happened here, and the old town still reads as medieval lanes rather than a rebuilt centre.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
- France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
- France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
- France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
- France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.
Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around
The centre is walkable but built on a slope: the station-to-old-town climb is genuinely steep, so plan the uphill leg once, not three times. A free shuttle (navette) links the station and bus station to the centre — check current times locally. Local buses reach Valras-Plage and Sérignan-Plage, with a beach bus about every 20 min in summer (about 30 min); check the current timetable and season. A car is the practical choice for the Oppidum d'Ensérune, Minerve and the vineyards.

The easy sea option. Sérignan-Plage is quieter and harder to reach without a car.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Old town (around the cathedral and Rue du 4 Septembre)
Medieval lanes, walkable to everything, but steep and quiet at night. Best for one or two nights without a car.
Allées Paul Riquet
The main café-and-shopping spine, flat and central; hotels and apartments here are the easiest base.
Station area
Cheaper rooms next to the train and bus stations; a 15–20 min uphill walk to the old town.
Canal du Midi / Fonseranes side
Quiet rooms near the locks, away from the centre; a car or taxi is the practical link — check distances before booking.
Valras-Plage / Sérignan-Plage
Beach bases 15–20 km (9.3–12 mi) away, reachable by seasonal beach bus; pick these only if the sea matters more than the town.Beach bases 9.3–12 mi (15–20 km) away, reachable by seasonal beach bus; pick these only if the sea matters more than the town.

Watch out
Safety
- The old town is hilly with cobbles; the station-to-centre walk is steep — take the shuttle or a taxi with bags.
- August Feria brings five days of bullfighting, crowds and higher room rates; book well ahead or avoid those dates.
- Béziers Cap d'Agde airport is seasonal: many routes do not run in winter, so check before booking flights.
- Some smaller museums and the tourist office keep limited hours outside summer; check before you walk up.
- Summer heat in the Languedoc is serious: shift sightseeing to morning and evening.
