Macclesfield is a Cheshire market town where the plain meets the Peak District, 20 minutes by train from Manchester and 1 h 45 min from London. Its draw is a compact centre, the silk-mill story and Ian Curtis's grave; most visitors see it in a day, or use it as a quieter, cheaper bed for Manchester and the hills.

Getting around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes, but it is not flat: expect steep lanes and slippery cobbles when wet. Buses to the suburbs and nearby towns leave from the bus station on Queen Victoria Street. Trains run from Macclesfield station, just east of the shopping area, to Manchester in about 20 min and London Euston in about 1 h 45 min. A car helps for the Peak District and the Cat and Fiddle road.
