Tangerang is a commuter city of over 2 million people just west of Jakarta, and Soekarno-Hatta, Indonesia's main international airport, sits inside it. Almost everything built here in the last 30 years is housing, malls and golf, run by private developers, so there is little for a visitor to walk to. The one real sight is the old Chinese quarter and its Benteng Heritage Museum. Treat the city as an airport bed, a mall stop, or a half-day between flights, and put your sightseeing nights in Jakarta instead.

Getting around

Angkot minibuses are the cheapest way (pay the driver, shout "kiri" to get off) but routes are unmarked and slow. Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical choice; taxis queue at malls and hotels. The KRL commuter brown line runs from Tangerang station to Duri in West Jakarta, where you change for central Jakarta and Bogor. Traffic is heavy all day.

Watch out

Safety

Petty theft and ATM distraction scams are the real risks, not violence; traffic is the bigger danger. Use app taxis after dark, keep bags in front of you in markets, and use camera-monitored ATMs.
  • Traffic: a 15 km hop can take 1–2 hours in the peak.
  • Use app-based ride-hailing or a metered taxi from a mall rank; street-hailed taxis may refuse the trip.
  • ATM skimming and distraction thefts are reported around malls and stations: use bank-branch or camera-monitored ATMs, and don't accept help from strangers.
  • Wet-season flooding closes underpasses and side roads in Dec–Mar.
  • Airport touts offer "fixed price" cars at 2–3× the app fare.
