Parksville is a small beach town on the east coast of Vancouver Island, about 30 minutes north of Nanaimo on Highway 19. The reason to come is Rathtrevor Beach: 2 km of sand and very shallow water that warms up in summer. It pairs with Qualicum Beach next door and works as a break on the drive to Tofino or Campbell River. Two nights covers the beach, the parks and the farm stops; one night is enough off-season.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the beach parks, the farm and the highway motels are spread out. BC Transit runs Route 9 (Nanaimo–Parksville–Qualicum Beach) and Route 88 (around Parksville), Monday–Saturday with limited Sunday service; cash fare $2.50, children 5 and under free. Taxis and Uber cover short hops.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime beach town; the real risks are cold water, strong currents at the river mouth, and summer traffic on Highway 19. Lock the car at trailheads.
  • Summer weekends fill the Rathtrevor campsites and beach resorts weeks ahead: book early.
  • The water is shallow and warms late; in June it can still be cold.
  • Many fun-park and farm attractions close from mid-October to March: check before you drive out.
  • The nearest hospital is in Nanaimo, about 30 minutes away.
