Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Alcalá de Henares is a compact UNESCO-listed university town 30 km northeast of Madrid, and the birthplace of Cervantes. The historic centre is small enough to walk in half a day, so most travellers come on a Cercanías train from Madrid and leave the same evening. Sleeping here makes sense mainly if you have an early flight from Barajas, 15 km west.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic centre is flat and compact: walk it. City buses charge a flat fare of €1.30 per ride, paid to the driver. Cercanías lines C2 and C7 link the station with Madrid Atocha (38 min), Nuevos Ministerios (47 min) and Chamartín (52 min), roughly every 5–10 min.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h to Atocha

Cercanías C2 or C7 from Alcalá de Henares station

Runs every 5–10 min; the obvious pairing in both directions.

Aranjuez

caution

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Cercanías C7 towards Madrid, change at Atocha or take C3 from Atocha

Doable but a long day; better as its own trip from Madrid.

Chinchón

skip

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Cercanías to Madrid, then bus 337 from Conde de Casal

Too many changes for a day trip from Alcalá.

El Escorial

skip

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Cercanías into Madrid, then C3 from Atocha or Príncipe Pío

Cross-city transfer makes it a Madrid-based day, not an Alcalá one.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town around Plaza de Cervantes and Calle Mayor

Everything walkable; the only area worth booking for a short stay.

Near the railway station (Plaza de la Estación)

200 m north of Vía Complutense; practical for a one-night airport stop.

La Garena and the university campus

Modern residential areas; only useful for the Roman ruins or the campus.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, well-lit small city; the real risks are summer heat, pickpockets on the Cercanías into Madrid and late-night walks back from the station area. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and shade on Calle Mayor is limited; sightsee before 13:00.
  • The Archbishop's Palace interior cannot be visited; the interview room is recreated at the Casa de la Entrevista.
  • University visits are by guided tour only, hourly in Spanish with an English tour at 14:00: check times before you go.
  • Cervantes' birthplace is free but admits visitors in small groups, so queues form.
