Alcalá de Henares
Go as a day trip from Madrid (38 min by Cercanías) or as your first/last night near Barajas: one full day covers the old town on foot.
Alcalá de Henares is a compact UNESCO-listed university town 30 km northeast of Madrid, and the birthplace of Cervantes. The historic centre is small enough to walk in half a day, so most travellers come on a Cercanías train from Madrid and leave the same evening. Sleeping here makes sense mainly if you have an early flight from Barajas, 15 km west.

Get around
The historic centre is flat and compact: walk it. City buses charge a flat fare of €1.30 per ride, paid to the driver. Cercanías lines C2 and C7 link the station with Madrid Atocha (38 min), Nuevos Ministerios (47 min) and Chamartín (52 min), roughly every 5–10 min.
