Västerås
Give Västerås one night, or a half-day stop on the Stockholm–Bergslagen line: cathedral, castle and lake islands on foot, 55 min from Stockholm.
Västerås is Sweden's fifth-largest city and one of its oldest, founded around 990 at the mouth of the Svartån where it meets Lake Mälaren. It is a working industrial city rather than a tourist set piece, and that is the appeal: a compact centre you can cross on foot in 20 minutes, a 13th-century cathedral, a castle tied to Gustav Vasa's Reformation decision of 1527, and a 340 km network of asphalt cycle paths. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Stockholm and the Bergslagen towns, or as one easy night out of the capital.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. VL city buses cover the suburbs; a single ticket is bought in the VL app or by card — check the current fare. The city's 340 km of asphalt cycle paths are the local pride: rent a bike or a by-the-minute e-scooter (Voi, Bolt, Qick) and use them. Taxis cover the whole town for roughly 100 kr; Bolt and Uber also operate.
