Colac

Stop for 2–3 hours on the Princes Highway for Lake Colac and the botanic gardens, or sleep one night as a cheaper Otways base; skip if you are driving the coast road.

Colac is the main town of the Otways, on the Princes Highway between Geelong and Warrnambool, about 2 h by road or 2 h 15 min by train from Melbourne. It is not on the Great Ocean Road itself: the coast at Apollo Bay is roughly 1 h 15 min south by road. Use it for a highway break, a lake walk and a bed that costs less than the coast, then push on to the Otways or the Twelve Apostles.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes. A car is needed for the lake circuit, the Otways and the coast; there is no local bus network worth planning around. V/Line trains run to Melbourne and Warrnambool about three times a day, and coach connections reach Lorne and Apollo Bay.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet country town and safe by day or night; the real risks are highway driving, wildlife on rural roads at dusk, and summer fire bans in the Otways.
  • It is a highway town: through traffic, trucks and little evening life after about 21:00.
  • Summer can bring total fire bans in the Otways and hinterland; check the CFA and VicEmergency before any bush walk.
  • Phone signal drops in parts of the Otways; download offline maps.
  • Lake levels fall in dry years, so the shoreline can be mudflats rather than water.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Colac. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Oct–Apr · avoid Jul–Aug (cold, wet, 10–14 °C days) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for MEL and AVV: last V/Line train times, hire-car desks, taxi fallback.
  2. Three walking clusters with anchors: Murray Street shops, the station and COPACC, the lake and botanic gardens.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (botanic gardens, visitor centre, lake foreshore) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Fire-ban and winter-rain fixtures so the Otways day trips can go green or red.
