Colac
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Princes Highway for Lake Colac and the botanic gardens, or sleep one night as a cheaper Otways base; skip if you are driving the coast road.
Colac is the main town of the Otways, on the Princes Highway between Geelong and Warrnambool, about 2 h by road or 2 h 15 min by train from Melbourne. It is not on the Great Ocean Road itself: the coast at Apollo Bay is roughly 1 h 15 min south by road. Use it for a highway break, a lake walk and a bed that costs less than the coast, then push on to the Otways or the Twelve Apostles.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- It is a highway town: through traffic, trucks and little evening life after about 21:00.
- Summer can bring total fire bans in the Otways and hinterland; check the CFA and VicEmergency before any bush walk.
- Phone signal drops in parts of the Otways; download offline maps.
- Lake levels fall in dry years, so the shoreline can be mudflats rather than water.
A quiet country town and safe by day or night; the real risks are highway driving, wildlife on rural roads at dusk, and summer fire bans in the Otways.
