Åre is Sweden's biggest ski resort, on Åreskutan in Jämtland, about 100 km west of Östersund. Winter is alpine skiing and nightlife; summer is hiking, trail running and downhill biking. The village is small and walkable, the ski system spans four linked areas, and beds sell out in peak weeks, so book early.

Getting around

The village is walkable. The ski bus runs hourly between Duved, Tegefjäll, Åre village and Björnen; it is free with a ski pass and about 20 SEK when the lifts are closed. Trains stop at Åre station in the centre. A car helps for waterfalls and side valleys, not for the resort itself.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are winter driving, cold exposure above the treeline, avalanche terrain off-piste and heavy drinking in peak weeks.
  • Peak weeks (New Year, sportlov weeks, Easter) sell out months ahead and prices jump.
  • Winter roads on the Scandinavian peninsula are icy and snow-covered; winter tyres are required in winter conditions.
  • The summit at 1,420 (≈ US$150) m is above the top lift (1,260 (≈ US$140) m): reaching it means ski touring, hiking or a snowmobile lift.
  • Off-piste and the summit run need avalanche awareness; check the daily forecast before going above the marked runs.
  • Åre is a party resort in winter — if you want quiet, stay in Duved, Tegefjäll or Björnen.
