Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Norway ↗Norway is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
  • Norway ↗Wine and spirits are sold only at the state Vinmonopolet shops; supermarkets sell beer, and not in the evenings or on Sundays.
  • Norway ↗The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you hike and camp on most uncultivated land, keeping a distance from homes and leaving no trace.

Lillehammer is a small lakeside town 2 hours by train from Oslo, known for the 1994 Winter Olympics and a preserved wooden centre. Two nights covers the museums, the Lysgårdsbakkene ski jump and a lake or valley day. It works as a stop on the Oslo–Trondheim line or as a winter sports base.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Central Lillehammer is small enough to walk: station to Storgata is two blocks. Regional buses leave from outside the train station; buy tickets on the Entur app or from the driver, card accepted. The ski jump is a 20–30 min uphill walk from the centre or a short bus ride.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Gjøvik

go

Door to door: About 45 min by train

Train along Lake Mjøsa, or the Skibladner paddle steamer in summer

A half-day lakeside town; the steamer is the better ride when it runs (late Jun–mid Aug).

Hamar

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train south along the Mjøsa shore

Cathedral ruins and an Olympic hall; easy half-day.

Lom and Jotunheimen

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Bus or car up the Gudbrandsdalen valley

Too far for a return day; sleep over to see the stave church and the national park.

Hafjell and Kvitfjell

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Ski bus from Lillehammer, about 15 min to Hafjell

1994 Olympic alpine slopes; winter only for skiing.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Storgata and the station

The walkable core: pedestrian street, shops, restaurants and the train station two blocks away. Best for a short stay without a car.

Hafjell and Nordseter

Ski resorts 15–25 min outside town with ski-in/ski-out lodging; only worth it if you are skiing.

Watch out

Safety

Lillehammer is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are winter ice on pavements, cold and dark on hikes, and slippery ski slopes: dress for the season and check trail conditions.
  • The ski jump site is an uphill walk from town: allow 20–30 min each way or take the bus.
  • Winter roads and the E6 can be slippery and slow; plan extra time if driving.
  • Many sights and the Skibladner run only in summer: check dates before you book around them.
  • The tourist office in the station building has limited weekend hours; Sundays closed outside summer.
