Stop for 2–4 hours on a Route 66 drive, not a night: the museum, the 1930s filling station and the Civil War cemetery fit one afternoon.
Baxter Springs is a small southeast Kansas town on the 13-mile Kansas stretch of Route 66, 22 km west of Joplin, Missouri. It has a mining and Civil War story, a restored 1930s service station that serves as the Kansas Route 66 visitor centre, and a local museum. There is no public transit and almost nothing open in the evening, so it works as a half-day stop on a drive rather than a place to sleep for several nights.
