Winnemucca is a small high-desert city on Interstate 80, about halfway across Nevada, with a railroad and mining past, a Basque restaurant tradition and a compact, walkable core. Most travellers use it as a break in the Reno–Salt Lake City drive or as an Amtrak California Zephyr stop. One night covers the town; a second only pays off if you want the desert trails or the dirt-track races.

Getting around

The core is compact and walkable, but sidewalks thin out beyond downtown and the streets are wide. For trails, dunes or the raceway you need a car; rental cars are available in town. Amtrak's station is an unstaffed platform southeast of the centre.

Safety

Winnemucca is a low-crime small town; the real risks are desert driving, summer heat, winter ice on I-80 and long gaps between services. Fill the tank before leaving town.
  • No AT&T cell service in Winnemucca; T-Mobile works. Free open Wi-Fi at some diners and fast-food places.
  • Amtrak times are inconvenient and often late: the westbound train calls in the early morning, the eastbound in the evening.
  • Winter storms close or slow I-80; carry chains and check road conditions before crossing the desert.
  • Casino winnings for non-US visitors can face a 30% IRS withholding; keep the 1042-S form.
  • The visitor centre's posted hours are unreliable: don't plan around it.
