Uzunköprü exists because of one structure: the 15th-century stone bridge over the Ergene, 172 arches and 1,239 m long, built for Murad II to carry the road to Edirne. The town around it is a low-rise agricultural market centre with a handful of Ottoman and early-Republican monuments in a compact walkable core. Almost nobody sleeps here; most travellers see it as a two-hour break on the Edirne–Keşan road, or a half-day from Edirne.

Getting around

The sights sit in a small walkable area between the bridge, Gazi Cd and Cumhuriyet Cd; 10–15 minutes on foot covers most of it. The railway station is 5 km north at Demirtaş village and the bus station is on the plaza at the bridge head, so use a dolmuş or taxi for both. Dolmuşes also run to Edirne, Keşan, Çorlu, Lüleburgaz and Babaeski.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real hazards are traffic on the bridge pavement, unlit roads at night and summer heat on the open causeway.
  • The bridge pavement is narrow and traffic still crosses it: walk facing oncoming traffic and keep to the edge.
  • There is no border crossing to Greece here even though the Maritsa is only 6 km west; cross at Ipsala (south) or Edirne (north).
  • The railway station is 5 km out of town with no useful bus; arrange the return taxi or dolmuş before you go.
  • The City Museum has had long closures; check locally before walking over.
  • St John the Baptist Church is nominally open Mon–Sat but is often shut.
