Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Carlisle is a border city of about 75,000 people, 10 miles from Scotland and the last big stop on the West Coast Main Line before Glasgow. Most travellers use it as an overnight break on a long drive or rail run, but the cathedral, castle and Tullie House museum are all close to the centre, and Hadrian's Wall country and the northern Lake District are within a day trip. Two nights is enough to see the city and one nearby site.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small: station to cathedral is about 8 minutes on foot, station to the castle about 12. Stagecoach bus 93 follows the Hadrian's Wall line west of town 2–3 times a day. Taxis queue at the station; car hire (Enterprise, Avis, Europcar and local firms) is on the edge of town.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald or Housesteads

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min each way

Train or bus to Brampton, then local bus or taxi to the wall

The wall itself is best seen east of Carlisle; the local section has little masonry left.

Keswick and the northern Lake District

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Bus 554 from Carlisle, about 85 min

A full day; buses are infrequent, check the last return.

Brampton and Lanercost

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train or Stagecoach 685, about 30 min

Small market town with a church and priory ruins nearby.

Gretna Green and the Scottish border

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Train to Gretna Green, about 20 min

Mostly a wedding-tourism stop; little else to do.

Bowness-on-Windermere

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Train to Oxenholme then branch line, about 2 h

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in the Lakes instead.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (around the station and Botchergate)

Best for one night with bags: station, cathedral, castle and pubs all walkable.

Historic quarter (Castle Street, Abbey Street, The Lanes)

Quieter, close to the cathedral and Tullie House; a short walk from the station.

Warwick Road and Botchergate south

Cheaper chain hotels and guesthouses; 10–15 min walk to the centre, more parking.

Watch out

Safety

Carlisle is a small, generally safe city; the main risks are wet, dark winter streets, uneven pavements and late-night drinkers around Botchergate. Standard city precautions apply.
  • The Guildhall on Fisher Street is closed to the public; it is museum storage.
  • Carlisle Castle opens weekends only (Sa Su 10:00–16:00) — check English Heritage before travelling.
  • The A66 over the Pennines closes in bad winter weather; use the A69 via Hexham instead.
  • Some pubs and restaurants close their kitchens by 21:00; eat earlier than you would in a big city.
