Carlisle
Give Carlisle one night, or a half-day between trains: cathedral, castle and Tullie House sit within a 10-minute walk of the station.
Carlisle is a border city of about 75,000 people, 10 miles from Scotland and the last big stop on the West Coast Main Line before Glasgow. Most travellers use it as an overnight break on a long drive or rail run, but the cathedral, castle and Tullie House museum are all close to the centre, and Hadrian's Wall country and the northern Lake District are within a day trip. Two nights is enough to see the city and one nearby site.

Get around
The centre is small: station to cathedral is about 8 minutes on foot, station to the castle about 12. Stagecoach bus 93 follows the Hadrian's Wall line west of town 2–3 times a day. Taxis queue at the station; car hire (Enterprise, Avis, Europcar and local firms) is on the edge of town.
